HUSOE has two research centers, an Early Learning Program that serves ages 3-5, and an Upward Bound Program. The HUSOE Early Learning Program is an NAEYC accredited early childhood program. It is comprised of the Adele B. McQueen Preschool, the Howard University Kindergarten, and the Howard University Summer Day Camp. HUSOE TRIO Upward Bound Programs serve students enrolled in four District of Columbia public high schools and four Prince George's County public high schools. Features of the program include individualized tutoring and instruction, project based learning, ACT and SAT preparation, college tours, and cultural enrichment.

HUSOE also has a hallmark research publication, the Journal of Negro Education, which recently celebrated its 75th anniversary.
