Teacher Residency
Program Overview
The one-year Howard University Teacher Residency Program is offered through a partnership between Howard University School of Education, Howard University Department of Computer Science, District of Columbia Public Schools, and U.S. Department of Education. Candidates will have the opportunity to earn teacher certification in the District of Columbia (DC) and a Master's degree in special education. The goal of the program is to help career changers and recent graduates transition to a successful career in teaching.
Program Benefits

Teacher residents receive a 15% tuition discount and a $53K stipend that can be used for living or education expenses while completing coursework in exchange for a 3-year teaching commitment

Teacher residents are placed in a partnering DC public school under the mentorship of well-trained teachers

Teacher residents will receive continued support through an induction program for two years after residency completion

University Admission Requirements

Academic degree that did not lead to teacher certification

Undergraduate GPA of 2.7 or higher

Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Reading score of 156 or higher*

Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Writing score of 162 or higher

Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Mathematics score of 150 or higher*

Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended

Three letters of recommendation

Application Deadline
