Program Overview

Teacher Students

The one-year Howard University Teacher Residency Program is offered through a partnership between Howard University School of Education, Howard University Department of Computer Science, District of Columbia Public Schools, and U.S. Department of Education. Candidates will have the opportunity to earn teacher certification in the District of Columbia (DC) and a Master's degree in special education. The goal of the program is to help career changers and recent graduates transition to a successful career in teaching.

Program Benefits

  • Teacher residents receive a 15% tuition discount and a $53K stipend that can be used for living or education expenses while completing coursework in exchange for a 3-year teaching commitment

  • Teacher residents are placed in a partnering DC public school under the mentorship of well-trained teachers

  • Teacher residents will receive continued support through an induction program for two years after residency completion

Targeted Recruitment

Black males, males of color, and individuals with STEM backgrounds or unique experiences are especially encouraged to apply.

University Admission Requirements

  • Academic degree that did not lead to teacher certification

  • Undergraduate GPA of 2.7 or higher

  • Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Reading score of  156 or higher*

  • Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Writing score of 162 or higher

  • Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Mathematics score of 150 or higher*

  • Personal Statement

  • Biographical Sketch

  • Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended

  • Three letters of recommendation

* Test score substitutions may be accepted by the DC Office of the State Superintendent (OSSE). See OSSE's website for details.

Additional Program Admission Requirements

  • Interview

  • Background check

  • Statement of interest in the Teacher Residency Program (this should be written in the Personal Statement)

Application Deadline
