Message from Director of Training

The PhD program in Counseling Psychology at the Howard University School of Education (HUSOE) is designed to educate and train counseling psychologists using a scientist-practitioner philosophy and to encourage students to identify and use culturally relevant prevention and intervention strategies that focus on the optimum strengths of each client. We work to foster an intellectual curiosity in both a supportive and challenging environment.

The students who attend Howard University come from a wide variety of backgrounds, from a number of different countries. They also vary relative to their previous academic and work experiences.  However, they all come with a deep desire to conduct research, practice and contribute to the scholarly discourse, with a sincere commitment to social justice for underserved and traditionally under-resourced populations.  Graduates from the Howard University Counseling Psychology Ph.D. Program are employed in a variety of settings, including counseling centers in colleges and universities, medical centers, Veterans Administration hospitals, school-based mental health, state and federal agencies, community mental health centers, academic departments in higher education institutions, professional associations, and in private practices.

Faculty research interests include (but are not limited to): mental health disparities, cross-cultural resilience factors in the process of recovery from traumatic injury; counseling and therapy with youth; multicultural counseling; intersections of identity from a racial, gender and sexual orientation perspective; co-occurring disorders; psychometric assessment; and criminal and police psychology. Our students actively conduct and present research with faculty members at conferences such as the American Psychological Association, the Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi) and the Annual Winter Roundtable at Teachers College-Columbia University.
